Ahmedabad: After operating its AI-based driving test system for nearly six weeks, Ahmedabad RTO is planning to set up a second automated driving test track at the Subhash Bridge facility. The move is expected to increase testing capacity and cut waiting times for permanent driving licence tests by almost half.Currently, Ahmedabad RTO has only one AI-enabled driving test track, leading to waiting periods of around 30 days for two-wheeler licence tests and 50 to 55 days for tests for a four-wheeler licence.Officials said planning for the second track is underway, and it is likely to become operational within the next eight months.Sources said the growing number of applicants, coupled with a high failure rate in AI-based tests, has created a backlog, making it difficult for candidates to secure early test slots. To address the increasing demand, the transport department decided to establish an additional track.The long-term plan is to have three AI-based driving test tracks in Ahmedabad.According to RTO officials, the existing facility conducts around 160 to 180 two-wheeler tests and 100 to 110 four-wheeler tests every day.Data from the first month of AI-based testing highlights a sharp contrast in pass rates between two-wheeler and four-wheeler applicants. Of the 2,060 light motor vehicle (LMV) tests conducted, only about 20% of applicants passed. In comparison, around 70% of the 3,456 two-wheeler applicants cleared the test.Officials said parallel parking accounted for nearly 80% of failures among four-wheeler applicants. For two-wheeler candidates, putting a foot down during the test was among the most common reasons for disqualification.
