Pune: Maharashtra Congress has directed its booth-level agents (BLAs) to submit detailed reports on discrepancies noticed during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across the state. Based on these constituency-wise inputs, the party plans to compile a comprehensive report and raise the issue with Election Commission of India (ECI).The decision was taken at a meeting of Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC)’s core committee in Mumbai on Tuesday, where politicians reviewed organisational and political matters along with feedback on the SIR exercise. MPCC core committee members said Congress was not opposed to the removal of duplicate entries from electoral rolls but wanted to ensure that genuine voters were not removed during the process.“The party has appointed BLAs in 252 assembly constituencies outside the Mumbai Congress jurisdiction. As the SIR process is entering its final phase, several discrepancies have come to light. BLAs have been asked to document these issues and submit detailed reports from their respective constituencies. Based on these findings, a consolidated report will be prepared and submitted to ECI,” a member of the MPCC core committee said.Former chief minister and senior Congress member Prithviraj Chavan, who attended the meeting, described the issue as serious, saying the party’s central leadership would decide how to pursue it politically and administratively. He said he had already written to the district collector after identifying irregularities during the SIR process in his Karad South assembly constituency.“There were around 56,000 duplicate voter entries in my constituency before the 2024 elections. Despite our complaints, no action was taken by ECI at the time. Now, during the SIR exercise, nearly 48,000 duplicate entries have been removed. I studied five nearby constituencies where 7,000 to 8,000 voters’ names are common in every constituency,” Chavan added.
