Ahmedabad: The City Crime Branch has registered a case against the holder of an X account for allegedly circulating a fabricated social media post containing false claims about changes in Gujarat’s political leadership.According to a complaint filed on Saturday by City Crime Branch PSI D B Kumpavat, officials monitoring social media platforms for cyber-related activities came across a post on X. The post was allegedly shared from an account identified as Pawan Tyagi (@PAWANTYAGI_07).Police alleged that the post falsely claimed that changes were imminent in Gujarat’s political leadership. According to the complaint, the post stated that chief minister Bhupendra Patel would be replaced, deputy chief minister Harsh Sanghavi would be appointed chief minister, and Patel would be made governor. Police described the content as fabricated and alleged that it was circulated on social media in the form of breaking news.The complaint stated that the post had the potential to create confusion and unrest among the public as well as supporters of the ruling BJP. Police further alleged that the circulation of the fabricated content could harm the reputation and constitutional standing of the chief minister and foster distrust towards the state govt.Based on the complaint, the crime branch registered a case against the X account holder under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to forgery, statements conducing to public mischief and criminal conspiracy, along with provisions of the Information Technology Act.
