Panaji: Savion Fernandes struck a brace as Fr. Agnel Multipurpose School, Verna, defeated Pope John Paul High School, Quepem, 6-0 in the final of the U-15 Subroto Mukherjee football tournament at Santa Cruz ground on Monday.The U-15 team from Fr. Agnel will now represent Goa at the annual international football tournament in Bengaluru from the first week of Sept. The team will be accompanied by physical education teacher Filbert Pereira and coach Luis Barretto.Savion’s opener was followed by Prestley Faleiro finding the goal, before Savion’s second that ensured a comfortable 3-0 lead at half-time. In the second half, Levi Misquita, Reuben Pereira and Stanislaus Costa got their names on the scoresheet as Fr. Agnel ran away easy winners.“We have been building up a new team from scratch, and all of us involved are happy with the way this side is shaping up for tougher challenges ahead,” said director Fr. Agnelo Gomes. “The actual work starts now. My appreciation goes out to our PE Sir Filbert and our coach Luis for all the hard work they have been putting in to get a well-balanced team that can compete at a high level. But, we have a long way to go and get these young boys to focus on the tasks that lie ahead, so that our school can be a worthy representative of Goa at the international competition.”Meanwhile, registrations have already opened up in all three age categories (boy’s U-15 and U-17 and girls U-17) for the 65th edition of the Subroto Cup International Football Tournament 2026. The U15 competition is held in Bengaluru, while the U-17 tournaments are worked out in New Delhi.Ajay Gaude, director, Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs (DSYA) and the executive director of Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) was the chief guest and presented the teams with their trophies and individual awards.
