Maharashtra Assembly Speaker says he and his family had no role in razing of 20 tribal homes in 2024

Mumbai: Responding to allegations by Sarvahara Jan Andolan that he was involved in an incident where 20 Katkari tribal families from Mhatroli village in Raigad’s Alibaug were allegedly forcibly evicted before their homes were demolished in March 2024, Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar said he or his family members had nothing to do with it.Sarvahara Jan Andolan on Tuesday at a news conference demanded the registration of offences under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against Rahul Narwekar, his wife Sarojini Narwekar, and others allegedly involved in the incident.Narwekar said the complaint filed in 2024 does not mention the name of Sarojini Narwekar or any of her family members either.“When Sarojini Narwekar purchased this property there was no claim or any encroachments on the land. The matter seems to have been settled between the previous owner and the complainants after which the complainants have voluntarily filed statements before the Tehsildar and concerned police officers stating that their dispute is resolved and they have no further claims. The complainants have also submitted affidavits signed before the magistrate stating they have no interest or claim over the said land,” Narwekar said.“For the past over 2.5 years, there was not even a whisper from the complainants about this issue. Suddenly, with an ulterior motive, some unconcerned entities and individuals seem to be raising an issue which has been settled between the previous owner and the complainants,” Narwekar said.
