Hinjewadi techie loses ₹7L in fake placement scam

Pune: Cybercrooks posing as officials of a placement firm duped a software engineer (36) from Hinjewadi of Rs7 lakh on the promise of securing him a job with an IT company.After a preliminary investigation, the Hinjewadi police registered a case recently. A police officer said the complainant works for an IT company in Hinjewadi. He had uploaded his resume on job-related websites. In April last year, he received an email from a placement firm assuring him of a better job.“The complainant was first asked to register with the firm so that it could arrange interviews with companies,” the officer said.The crooks shared a payment link with the techie for move forward. The techie transferred some funds through the payment link. Soon, the firm arranged an interview for him. Thereafter, he was asked to transfer more money.“Crooks took Rs7 lakh between April 2025 and Jan 2026 by citing different reasons from the complainant,” the officer said.Whenever the complainant enquired about the job, they demanded more money on the pretext of issuing an offer letter. “Complainant eventually realised he was duped,” the officer added.
