Panaji: The proposed National Legal Academy (NLA) for compulsory training of lawyers, as directed by the Supreme Court, will be set up at the Bar Council of India (BCI) Trust-run India International University of Legal Education and Research (IIULER) campus in Goa, said BCI chairperson Manan Kumar Mishra on Sunday .Speaking at Deeksharambh, the orientation programme for IIULER’s 2026 batch, Mishra said the academy will be established on the lines of the National Judicial Academy (NJA) in Bhopal.The event was attended by IIULER chancellor and Supreme Court judge Justice P S Narasimha, whose bench, during a hearing last month, directed the BCI to set up the NLA.Mishra said the academy would host young lawyers from across the country for mandatory post-enrolment training, likely to be conducted over 10 days to two weeks. He added that IIULER students would also get opportunities to interact with judges, trainers, professors and senior advocates.The BCI chairperson said that at a meeting held on Saturday with chief minister Pramod Sawant, advocate general Devidas Pangam and Justice Narasimha, it was decided to complete construction of IIULER’s main campus on over 50 acres at Dharbandora within two years.The proposed academy is aimed at structured lifelong post-enrolment education, stronger ethical standards and helping lawyers adapt to technological changes.Addressing students, Justice Narasimha urged them to focus on personality development during their studies and adopt a multidisciplinary approach, saying boundaries between subjects would increasingly blur. Pangam and dean of Leeds Law School, UK, Prof Deveral Capps, also addressed the students.
