Chennai: Customs seized some 11kg of hydroponic ganja worth ₹11 crore from two passengers arriving from Bangkok via Singapore. This is the second seizure in three weeks.The air intelligence unit at Chennai intercepted the two passengers, both natives of Kerala on Thursday.Five airtight packets disguised as food items were seized from their check-in luggage. The second bag had six airtight sachets. The packets contained green flowering and fruiting tops with strong odour. It was confirmed on the spot that it was hydroponic weed.During inquiries, the passengers admitted that they were hired by cartels to transport the hydroponic weed to Chennai, from where it could be distributed to Bengaluru and Mumbai.While officials remanded one of them under NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act, the other was handed to Narcotics Control Bureau to trace and secure receivers. Further investigation is under way.On May 25, Customs had seized 10.1 kg of hydroponic weed from a passenger who arrived from Bangkok. Since Jan, they have seized 65kg of hydroponic weed at Chennai airport.
