Times News NetworkVasco: A senior citizen from Headland Sada, Francisco Nunes, died on Wednesday after a large tree crashed on to him while he was riding his scooter along the Vasco-Cortalim highway.The incident took place at around 8.20am, when Nunes, 62, reached near St Anthony chapel. The tree on a cliff of a hillock close to the chapel crashed on the road. Nunes, who was trapped under the tree, died on the spot.Another scooter rider, Nilesh Gawde, 37, resident of Ponda, also sustained injuries in the incident. Vasco fire personnel led by Dilip Bicholkar rushed to the site on receiving an emergency call. The incident led to long queues of vehicles on either sides of the highway. Several commuters, including office goers and students, were stranded for a long time before fire personnel managed to clear the fallen tree.Locals have been demanding for some time now that dangerous trees located on the cliff of the hillock along the Vasco-Cortalim highway be pruned, as they pose a direct danger to people using the highway below.Commuters have demanded that authorities concerned, including the South Goa collector, intervene immediately and clear the dangerous trees.
