Three more die in Tiruvallur ammonia leak, death toll reaches 13

Chennai: Three more workers succumbed to complications caused by an ammonia gas leak at a private seafood processing unit in Tiruvallur district, taking the death toll to 13, all of them women. On Thursday, three women died at two govt hospitals—Stanley Medical College Hospital and Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH).Of the total 83 affected workers, 43 others, including a man, are undergoing treatment at hospitals in Chennai and Tiruvallur, a health department bulletin released on Thursday said. While 14 patients are on ventilators, 21 are on oxygen support, and the condition of eight patients is stable. Twenty-seven workers have been discharged so far.Bodies of eight victims have already been airlifted to Odisha. Two bodies have been flown to Assam. The bodies of the three women will be sent home after formalities are completed, the bulletin said.Among those undergoing treatment, 25 workers are from Odisha, six from Assam, three each from Jharkhand and Kerala, and six from Tamil Nadu.The ammonia leak occurred four days ago, on June 21, at a private seafood processing and export unit in the Kannigaipair–Manjankaranai area near Periyapalayam in Tiruvallur. The incident took place during routine industrial operations.Patients are being treated at Vels Hospital, Venkateswara Hospital, RGGGH, and Stanley Hospital. Of the 13 deaths reported so far, five occurred at Stanley Hospital, four at RGGGH, three at Vels Hospital, and one at Venkateswara Hospital.
