Delhi, NCR states set to offer 100% road tax waiver for trucks and buses running on clean fuel

NEW DELHI: All four NCR states — Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan — are expected to notify the policy to waive off motor vehicle tax or road tax for buying new trucks and buses running on clean fuel after scrapping their old pre-BS-VI heavy commercial vehicles, a senior road transport ministry official said on Monday.Addressing an event on cleaner freight in Delhi, Mahmood Ahmed, an additional secretary in the ministry, said they have spoken to the state govts and the states “will hopefully notify in the coming days and weeks the 100% motor vehicle tax concession”. This will be a big incentive for those who want to avail the scheme named Parivartan that the Union Cabinet approved recently to phase out old polluting trucks and buses with cleaner ones.Mahmood said they have spoken to vehicle manufacturers and have signed MoUs where industry has offered to extend 8% discount on the ex-showroom price of new vehicles. He added that the ministry is talking to 35-37 district collectors in NCR and are also involving lead bank coordinators at the district level to reach out to truck and bus owners to persuade them to onboard the scheme.Amid campaign for only electric vehicles, the official said that they don’t want to look at one solution for all the problems and that “a bouquet of solutions” is the need of the hour. He said a customer should have the ultimate say. On the govt’s push for modernisation of vehicles, Mahmood said, “The way to go is not punitive measures.”
