Mumbai: BMC commissioner Ashwini Bhide, during a monthly review meeting with various civic departments on Friday, directed officials to start a road-washing campaign from October 1 to 15 to combat air and dust pollution.The initiative includes street cleaning, installing covers around major construction projects, and appointing a nodal officer to monitor large projects that could affect the city’s air quality.While at present, the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) is under control, these measures will be carried out to prevent deterioration in air quality in the coming months, especially in the month of Oct.Around 139 locations have been identified where traffic congestion is caused due to bottlenecks. Bhide asked officials to study the issues at these locations and remove the structures obstructing traffic.Bhide also stressed the need for timely and proper resolution of complaints received from citizens. The BMC’s Management and Redressal of Grievance (Marg) system has received 87,004 complaints so far, of which around 64% have been successfully resolved.The municipal commissioner also directed officials to ensure that the consistency is maintained while implementing the ‘Pedestrian First’ campaign.
