City set to get parking space for 6,400 vehicles by Oct-end

New Delhi: By the end of Oct, the city is expected to get additional parking space for about 6,400 vehicles.As part of measures to control air pollution ahead of the winter season, MCD, in accordance with CAQM directions, has identified 81 new sites for developing surface parking lots.Currently, the civic body has 399 surface parking lots with a capacity to accommodate about 74,000 vehicles. With the addition of the new parking lots, MCD will have 480 surface parking sites — an increase of 20% — with a combined capacity of nearly 95,000 vehicles.The civic body has also finalised sites for developing 12 multilevel parking lots (MLPs). At present, Delhi has 30 MLPs with an estimated capacity of 11,790 vehicles.Officials said the move is also keeping in mind increased demand and the need to curb roadside parking.“Tenders for 34 of the 81 sites have been floated while for 30 sites, the exercise to finalise agencies to operate the parking lots will be completed by Sept 24. The remaining 17 sites will be taken up for tender during Oct after mapping is completed,” an official said.The locations have been identified near commercial hubs, markets and hospitals, with parking space being created based on the availability of land, MCD said. Sites transferred by other agencies, including DDA, as well as those previously used for illegal parking, have been incorporated after obtaining approval from Delhi Traffic Police.The zone-wise breakup of the 34 sites includes Shahdara South (10), Najafgarh (5), City-Sadar Paharganj (4), Karol Bagh (4), West (3), Rohini (3), South (2), Central (1) and Civil Lines (1).The sites are located in Patparganj Industrial Area, Dwarka Sector 14, Jagatpur near Wazirabad metro station, Ravidas Marg near Govindpuri metro station, a site adjacent to the main road in Chirag Dilli, a plot opposite Vardhaman Complex in Paharganj, near Janakpuri Thana Road and Avantika Market in Rohini zone, among other locations.The 30 parking sites to be tendered include eight in City-Sadar Paharganj zone, five in Central, six in Civil Lines and three in Keshavpuram. The sites are located near Sanjeevan Hospital on Ansari Road, with space for 247 four-wheelers and 137 two-wheelers; Old Meherchand Market (138 four-wheelers and 45 two-wheelers); near Usmanpur mohalla clinic (185 vehicles); and Ramphal Chowk in Dwarka Sector 8 (100 four-wheelers and 20 two-wheelers).
