Woman loses Rs49 lakh in online share trading fraud

Pune: Cybercrooks duped a 56-year-old eatery owner from Budhwar Peth of Rs49 lakh on the promise of giving her 35% returns on her investments in the share market.The fraud took place between June and August this year. The woman lodged a complaint with Vishrambaug police on Friday.An officer from Vishrambaug police said the complainant runs an eatery near Appa Balwant Chowk and also trades in the share market. “The accused contacted the woman in April this year, posing as an executive of an investment advisory firm. He started sharing stock market investment tips with her, promising a 35% profit. The woman earned a good profit through his tips and even paid him a commission. In June, the accused asked her to invest more money in a jackpot scheme to earn double the amount.”The accused had already gained the woman’s confidence, so she accepted the offer and transferred Rs49 lakh between June and August to bank accounts provided by him. “When she did not get her money back, she started pursuing the accused. When she did not get a response from him, she realised she had been duped and approached us,” the officer said.
