Surat: A 40-year-old beauty parlour owner accused a 30-year-old man of establishing a sexual relationship with her over several years using the assurance of marriage before ultimately reneging and refusing to marry her. Athwalines police have registered a case of sexual relations by deceitful means against him.According to the FIR, the woman, a resident of the Athwalines area, came into contact with the accused through Snapchat in 2021. Their online interactions soon developed into a relationship.The woman alleged that the accused visited her home regularly and they were in a consensual relationship. During this period, he repeatedly assured her that he would marry her and convince his family members to accept the match.In 2022, the accused introduced the woman to his mother and sister. She stated that the family members were in regular contact with her thereafter.According to the complaint, whenever she raised the issue of marriage, the accused postponed discussions, citing reasons such as a slowdown in business.About one-and-a-half years ago, the accused told her that his mother had opposed the marriage. The complainant alleged that his family members had objected to the proposal and made remarks about her appearance. She was later told that the family was also unwilling to accept the marriage because of their age difference.Tensions escalated in Sep when the woman posted a birthday greeting for the accused on her social media profile. The accused later told her that his mother was unhappy about the post and told her to ‘forget him’.The accused’s mother later contacted her and reiterated that the family would not agree to the marriage.On Sep 22, after the accused allegedly refused the marriage proposal, the woman drank phenyl in a bid to end her life, police said. She was rushed to hospital and survived.After she recovered, she approached Athwalines police and lodged a complaint.
