Safety fears over stray cattle at Canacona, activists seek Chaudi gaushala

Canacona: Stray cattle are increasingly occupying roads at several busy points in Canacona taluka, including Ardhofond, Partagal, Poinguinim, Chaudi, Bhatpal and Agonda, posing a hazard to motorists and often falling victim to accidents.Local animal welfare activists have urged chief minister Pramod Sawant and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar to address the issue urgently, noting that it was raised during the last Assembly session.Activist Siddesh Bandekar said the problem has arisen as cattle owners have stopped caring for their animals. “Many animals contract diseases due to neglect, suffer injuries, and some are killed in accidents,” said Bandekar. There are no cattle sheds left in the coastal villages of the taluka as many locals have converted their cattle sheds into rooms for rent to tourists, he said. He said that last week, a calf was severely injured in the leg at Parvem, Agonda. After animal lovers alert the animal husbandry department, veterinary staff sometimes provide temporary treatment, and some animals are later moved to gaushalas outside the constituency.Animal lovers have urged govt to set up a well-equipped gaushala in the central part of the taluka, possibly at Chaudi. The issue was raised at Agonda gram sabhas, but activists say no clear action has followed.
