R Manivannan steps down as TNERC chairman; state govt to form search committee soon
TNERC chairman R Manivannan resigned on Friday

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) chairman R Manivannan resigned on Friday, joining the list of officers stepping down from key positions in the state. With two member posts of the commission already remaining vacant, the entire coram has become vacated with Manivannan’s resignation.Manivannan assumed as TNERC chairman on January, 2025, after retiring from TNPDCL as distribution director and he can serve as a chairman upto three years. The decision for his resignation is not known.TNERC director (engineering) John Sundararaj too has followed sit and tendered his resignation on Friday.A quasi judicial body, TNERC disposes of electricity related disputes between discom and business consumers, apart from approving and ratifying various electricity related projects, expenditures, and power purchases. The three member quorum of TNERC comprising chairman and two members also decides electricity tariffs and hold stakeholders meetings as per Electricity Act to decide on key issues.The state government is likely to form a search committee soon to invite applications to fill the coram.TNERC chairman’s resignation comes a day after retired IPS officers Shankar Jiwal and Sunil Kumar stepped down from chairman posts of TN fire service commission and TN uniform services recruitment board, respectively.
