Police posted at Anjunem's support dam as picnickers wreck havoc

Keri: Due to the relentless heat caused by weak monsoon activity, the water resources department (WRD) established a support dam just 1km away from the main masonry dam of Anjunem in Keri. This was to supply irrigation water to farmers. However, the WRD encountered an unexpected problem– a large number of picnickers visiting the site over the last month. The WRD tried various measures, including posting of security guards and putting up prohibitory signage, but to no avail. Picnickers continued to visit in big numbers, causing nuisance while defying the security guards posted at the support dam.WRD officials feared not only any untoward incident taking place at the site, but also possible pollution of the waters. Finally, WRD executive engineer Anil Parulekar lodged a complaint at Valpoi police station, seeking their help to prevent the public from visiting the site. On Sunday, two policemen were posted at the site and they have begun patrolling around the Anjunem support dam.Water levels at the main Anjunem dam have dipped to around 27% with barely a month’s supply remaining in the reservoir.
