Monsoon-ready: WR fortifies tracks, bridges and drainage

Ahmedabad: The Western Railway’s Ahmedabad division has intensified its monsoon preparedness to ensure passenger safety and uninterrupted train operations. A review meeting chaired by divisional railway manager Ved Prakash assessed the division’s readiness to tackle rain-related disruptions, with officials reviewing preventive maintenance of tracks, bridges, culverts and drainage systems.The division said joint inspections with state govt departments were being conducted to identify vulnerable locations and improve drainage arrangements. Special attention was given to preventing waterlogging at stations and railway yards, while vulnerable bridges were under round-the-clock monitoring.As part of the preparedness drive, 132 km of side drains were cleaned, while tree cutting and trimming was completed at 190 locations. To deal with flooding at Road Under Bridges (RUBs), 260 high-capacity pumps were installed. Railway officials undertook flange clearance over 675 km of tracks and set up 37 sumps to improve drainage in track and yard areas.Emergency restoration materials, including ballast and quarry dust, were stocked at strategic locations such as Dhrangadhra, Gandhidham, Maliya and Adraj-Moti, with dedicated emergency teams kept on standby. The division will also coordinate with local authorities to monitor Railway Affecting Tanks.Meanwhile, owing to heavy rainfall in south Gujarat, three trains scheduled for July 9—Bareilly-Vatva (19417), Okha-Mumbai Saurashtra (22946) and Asansol-Bhavnagar (12942)—were cancelled.
