Pune: From tap aerators and flow regulators to dual-flush toilet conversion kits and pressure-controlled spray nozzles, households are ramping up at-home water conservation efforts as supply cuts come into effect and concerns grow about worsening shortages.Residents said many of these measures were adopted two to three months back after appeals from the civic body and warnings from India Meteorological Department (IMD) about deficient rainfall. “We have bought sprinklers for water taps in the kitchen to reduce water usage and also cut down greywater generation,” Sunil Kulkarni, a resident of Paud Road, said.Users said some equipment, such as aerators, was inexpensive and readily available, suitable for both individual homes and public water taps. “I use an aerator and, after seeing its benefits, I started giving it to others. It has helped people and saved thousands of litres of water in housing societies across Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad,” Ganesh Bora, a Chinchwad resident, said. He said an aerator could be bought for about Rs 60.Some households have switched to dual-flush systems and check valves. Car owners, too, are opting for water-efficient cleaning equipment like high-pressure washers, cordless water guns and adjustable spray nozzles. AM Dixit, an office bearer of a housing society in Kothrud, said residents were reminded to conserve water as dependence on borewells was expected to increase during supply curbs. “We have urged members to postpone heavy water-use chores like laundry on days when water supply is cut,” he said.Several societies have introduced informal restrictions, including limiting washing machine use to alternate days and reducing water-intensive activities such as vehicle washing and common area cleaning.Politicians and civic officials have also intensified calls for citizens to play a more active role in water management. “We are urging people to use these devices. It will not only raise awareness about water conservation, but also actually save water,” said Anil Rupade of the local BJP unit.PMC officials said conservation campaigns were being promoted through both conventional and digital platforms. “The water cuts have been declared. Citizens should ensure that water is used only when necessary. Misuse of water must be reduced,” said Nandkishor Jagtap, head of the PMC water supply department.
