Manickam Tagore appointed Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president

CHENNAI: The All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Saturday appointed Virudhunagar MP Manickam Tagore as the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president. He replaces K Selvaperunthagai.The appointment comes in the wake of Selvaperunthagai insisting AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge to relieve him from the post. Tagore was one of the key Congress functionaries responsible for the party drifting away from DMK and joining TVK. He was critical of DMK even before the assembly election and was consistently demanding share in power.He indulged in a tug of war with DMK functionaries in Madurai during the seat sharing talks. He was also critical about Selvaperunthagai on a couple of occasions. He resigned from the post of election management and coordination committee as he was unhappy with the candidates selection process.Manickam Tagore is a three-time MP and currently serves as Congress whip in Lok Sabha. He serves as the AICC in-charge in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He defeated MDMK general secretary Vaiko in Virudhunagar Lok Sabha constituency in 2009.
