Kolkata: Nearly a year after Rs 56 lakh was siphoned off from Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee’s bank account, Kolkata Police’s cybercrime wing has arrested the alleged mastermind from Assam. Accused Mukuleswar Reza was arrested from Rangapaniand produced before a court on Saturday. The fraud came to light in Nov 2025. The account, opened at a nationalised bank branch at the state assembly during his tenure as Asansol South MLA between 2001 and 2006, remained inactive after he became an MP. Cops said the accused allegedly revived it using forged KYC papers. Police said Reza posed as a lawyer and entered the branch, where he allegedly changed the registered mobile without raising suspicion. Once the number was altered, he gained control of the account. Reza allegedly used the stolen money to buy gold in an attempt to conceal the money trail. — Tamaghna Banerjee
