Kolkata: A man died and two of his family members were critically injured after a neighbour allegedly attacked them with a cleaver in Cossipore on Wednesday morning. Police arrested the accused, Dilip Pal, and seized the weapon.While Ananta Manna died at R G Kar Hospital on Thursday, his son and another family member were being treated at the hospital, police said, adding the attack was linked to an alleged extramarital relationship and an ongoing court case.Pal was allegedly in a relationship with Manna’s wife, Anita. After the relationship came to the surface, Anita tried to end it but Pal reportedly objected to it. In 2018, Pal allegedly shared Anita’s photos on social media and demanded Rs 2 lakh from her to delete them. Anita paid the money but lodged a complaint at the Cossipore PS. Police registered a case of extortion and offences under the IT Act, a charge sheet was filed and the trial is still on.Around 6 am on Wednesday, Pal allegedly went to the Mannas’ home and allegedly threatened to kill them if they did not withdraw the cases against him. As an argument broke out, Pal went home only to return with a cleaver, police said. He reportedly attacked Manna on his hands, shoulders and chest. When Ananta’s son and other family members tried to stop him, he also attacked them, including Anita.Neighbours overpowered Pal and called the police. Pal told police he attacked them to force them to withdraw the case.
