Light rain on Nov 2 and 3; mercury dips slightly

Panaji: With a trough in the southeast Arabian Sea off the south Kerala-Karnataka coast and another system in the Bay of Bengal, India Meteorological Department (IMD), Panaji, has forecast light rain or thundershowers on Nov 2 and 3. Earlier, its bulletin had forecast rain in isolated areas on Nov 4 and 5.While the trough is linked to upper-air cyclonic circulation over the south Maharashtra coast, a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Andaman & Nicobar islands is persisting in the same region.Post-monsoon rainfall in Oct touched 65.3mm, compared to the normal value of 164.8mm – a deficit of 60.4%.After day-night temperatures rose for a long period in Oct, the mercury came down, providing some relief. On Tuesday, the minimum temperature dropped to 21.1°C – 2.4 degrees below normal. On subsequent days, it hovered between 22 and 23°C, well within the normal range.“Occasional cloud and rain, changing winds and atmospheric circulation have reduced temperatures over Goa,” said M R Ramesh Kumar, chief scientist (retired) of NIO.He said winter cooling across the Indian subcontinent, along with Cyclone Arnab’s landfall on the east coast, may have contributed to the temperature dip.Though maximum temperatures have been below 34°C for a few days, the mercury rose to 36°C – 3.3°C above normal on Tuesday. But IMD Panaji recorded 32.8°C and 33.5°C on subsequent days – within the normal range. With clear skies in the evening, the day’s radiation escapes, causing fast cooling and dew formation.
