Ahmedabad: A local court on Wednesday refused to send security guard Dharam Singh (27), accused of restraining and raping a 22-year-old student, to police remand, and sent him to judicial custody.Singh allegedly raped the interior design student, who lived as a paying guest in Jodhpur area, on her apartment building’s terrace. He also allegedly restrained her using a wire around her neck. Singh had joined the security agency that deputed him only four days before the alleged rape.When he was taken to Hebatpur area on Sunday evening to recover the student’s mobile phone, he allegedly tried to snatch the service pistol of a police inspector. This led to a scuffle and Singh was shot in the leg. After his treatment, he was discharged and the investigator produced him before the court. The prosecutor sought his five-day custodial interrogation on various grounds. The court, however, rejected the remand application and sent Singh to Sabarmati jail.The investigator urged the court to be allowed to insert BNS Section 308(5) against Singh for the allegation of taking away the student’s mobile phone. The court granted the permission, sources said.
