Pune: A 26-year-old grocer died by suicide in Bhosari after a woman customer allegedly threatened to lodge a police complaint against him, accusing him of stealing her gold earring, which she claimed had fallen at his shop.The woman allegedly took Rs 1 lakh from the victim, who was 50% disabled, and demanded an additional Rs 55,000. Unable to bear the alleged harassment, the victim jumped from the 12th floor of his residential building in Bhosari on July 27.His father lodged a complaint against the woman with the Bhosari police on Saturday. Police have registered a case against the unidentified woman under section 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).An officer from the Bhosari police said the victim ran his father’s grocery shop on Alandi Road in Bhosari. “On July 27, he jumped from the terrace of his 12-storey residential building. He recorded a video before jumping from the building,” the officer said.In the video, the victim allegedly said he was ending his life because of the woman, who he claimed was blackmailing and harassing him. According to the police, the woman had visited his shop on the pretext of purchasing a drum but did not buy anything.“The next day, she called him and claimed that her gold earring had fallen in his shop. The victim searched the entire shop but could not find the earring. The woman later returned to the shop with another person and allegedly accused him of stealing the earring and threatened to lodge a police complaint against him,” the officer added.She allegedly took Rs 1 lakh from him and demanded another Rs 55,000. In the video, the victim reportedly said he was ending his life because he could no longer bear the harassment. He also mentioned the woman’s name and the hotel where she works.“The victim’s relative took his body to Pali in Rajasthan for the last rites. After returning, his father lodged the complaint against the woman,” he added.
