Chennai: India’s electric vehicle (EV) market sustained its growth momentum in June, with monthly registrations rising to 2.9 lakh units and EV penetration climbing to around 12%, underscoring the rapid mainstream adoption of battery-powered mobility.The June tally was nearly one lakh units higher than the 1.9 lakh registrations recorded a year ago and surpassed May’s 2.8 lakh units, marking another month of robust growth.Growth continued to be powered by electric two-wheelers (E2Ws), which accounted for nearly two-thirds of total EV volumes. E2W registrations climbed to 1.8 lakh units in June from 1.1 lakh units a year earlier and 1.7 lakh units in May, reflecting sustained consumer demand.The Apr-Jun 2026 quarter also marked a major milestone for the segment. For the first time, electric 2W sales crossed the five-lakh mark in a single quarter, reaching 5.1 lakh units in Q1FY27. Total EV registrations, including all segments, for the first quarter of FY27 stood at a record 8.1 lakh units.In the E2W market, TVS Motor retained its leadership position in June with sales of 44,467 units, ahead of Bajaj Auto, whose volumes grew to 40,576 units from 39,503 units in May. Ather Energy continued to gain ground, with registrations rising to 29,422 units from 28,503 units a month earlier. Hero MotoCorp’s sales stood at 20,198 units, while Greaves Electric Mobility’s volumes crossed 10,000 units for the first time. Ola Electric’s volumes remained largely flat at 15,096 units.The electric PV segment also continued its rapid expansion, recording an all-time high of around 29,000 registrations in June, almost doubling from 15,278 units a year ago and edging past May’s 28,214 units. The record volumes reflect growing consumer acceptance of electric cars and SUVs, aided by an expanding product portfolio and improving charging infrastructure.Electric 3W registrations, however, moderated marginally to 72,270 units in June from 72,752 units in May, though they remained significantly higher than the 60,803 units recorded a year earlier.
