Chennai: A three-year-old boy was killed after a heavy iron plate fell on him at a Metrowater construction site in Kannappasamy Nagar in Puzhal on Saturday. He was returning home with his father after ordering a cake for his birthday on Monday when the accident occurred. On Saturday evening, a Metrowater contractor was operating a crane to move heavy sewer pipes and iron plates for the underground drainage work on Kannappasamy Nagar Main Road.Police said Vignesh and his son were walking home when the rope holding the iron plate snapped, causing the plate to fall on the boy. While Vignesh escaped unhurt, the boy sustained severe injuries to his lower abdomen and both legs. The child was rushed to a nearby hospital for first aid and later shifted to a private hospital near Madhavaram Roundabout, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit. We have witnessed several minor accidents, but we never thought negligence would claim a life,” said Thamarai Selvan, secretary, Kannappasamy Nagar residents’ welfare association.“He was the couple’s only child, and this is an irreparable loss for them,” said Pankajam, a neighbour. “The officials carry out the work even during peak hours when there is heavy movement of vehicles and pedestrians,” she said.
