Mumbai: A 25-year-old man allegedly died in a freak accident in Mira Road after a parked car’s airbag unexpectedly deployed and struck him in the neck on Wednesday.The steering wheel airbag casing allegedly hit the victim with high intensity, causing deep injuries and fatal haemorrhaging inside the stationary vehicle.The deceased, Mohit Soni, was a resident of the Tiara Hills building in Kashimira. The incident allegedly occurred on Wednesday afternoon when the victim was inside a Honda car, bearing registration number MH01AL6301, which was parked along the road.Sources said the steering wheel airbag suddenly triggered without any apparent warning. The plastic cover protecting the safety mechanism allegedly flew off with immense force, striking Soni on the right side of his neck and causing profuse bleeding. Soni was rushed to the Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Govt Hospital in Bhayandar, where doctors examined him and declared him dead before admission.An accidental death report has been registered by the Kashimira police to initiate a probe into the suspected technical failure.Primary inspections of the car by police officials from all sides reportedly revealed no visible evidence of an external collision or accident. Sources in the Kashimira police stated that the vehicle is 15 years old but reportedly possessed a valid fitness certificate.It is alleged that the incident came to light a bit later than usual because the vehicle was stationary, and passers-by did not initially notice anything amiss.The suspected delay allegedly left the victim helpless inside the cabin, where he succumbed to excessive bleeding.A forensic team was summoned to the spot to collect blood samples from the vehicle’s interior. As part of the ongoing investigation, regional transport office authorities will be called to thoroughly inspect the car’s mechanical and electrical systems before submitting a technical report. Investigators are currently verifying the exact sequence of events to determine how the safety feature malfunctioned.
