Ahmedabad: Goldsmith conned with polishing ruse

Ahmedabad: A goldsmith allegedly lost jewellery worth Rs 22.5 lakh after one of his workers was tricked into handing over two gold ornaments to a man who promised to get them polished, according to a complaint filed with Kalupur police on Saturday.According to the complaint, on Jan 27, a customer brought a 22-carat gold necklace weighing 106 grams and a 22-carat gold chain weighing 57.4 grams to the jeweller in Kalupur for polishing.Since the shop did not undertake polishing work, the jeweller handed both ornaments to a worker who had been employed at his shop for around 10 years and sent him to another shop for the job.The polishing shop reportedly refused to undertake the work. While the worker was returning with the jewellery, another worker allegedly approached him and claimed that he could arrange for the ornaments to be polished elsewhere. The suspect allegedly gained the worker’s confidence by speaking in Bengali and claiming to be from the same region in West Bengal. The suspect took the worker to a location in a pol area of Kalupur and asked him to wait outside a shop while he went inside a nearby commercial building with the jewellery. However, he allegedly did not return. His mobile phone was subsequently found switched off. The jeweller later checked with the shop where the suspect worked and obtained his identification details. The jewellery comprised a necklace valued at Rs 14.6 lakh and a chain valued at Rs 7.9 lakh. The jeweller had initially submitted an application to police but filed a formal complaint on Saturday. The suspect is yet to be traced.
