Actress Rupa Dutta gets bail in Rs 1.48L Colaba theft case

MUMBAI: A Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court granted bail to 43-year-old Bengali actor Rupa Umashankar Dutta, who was arrested last week for allegedly stealing valuables worth Rs 1.48 lakh in Colaba. Rupa Dutta is an actress who has worked in a few Hindi and Bengali movies, including ‘Sathi’.She has also worked in the Hindi serial, ‘Jai Maa Vaishnodevi’, apart from some Bengali films. She made headlines in 2022, when she was first arrested for pickpocketing at the Kolkata Book Fair in 2022.RS Bhosale (Narsale), additional chief judicial Magistrate, granted bail to Dutta on a personal bond of Rs 50,000 and directed that she shall not tamper with the evidence or leave India without court’s permission.The case pertains to a complaint lodged by a Marine Drive-resident Dimple Singhvi, who lodged a complaint with the Colaba police that her purse containing a diamond-studded gold bracelet worth Rs 1.20 lakh, cash of Rs 10,000, Apple AirPods worth Rs 15,000, a wallet and other personal documents were stolen on July 12, 2026, while she was moving through crowded areas between Babulnath Temple and Colaba.During probe, Colaba Police stumbled upon CCTV footage where Dutta is seen tailing the victim. On July 6, police arrested Rupa. Some of the stolen property was also recovered from her possession. Her advocate Sunil Pandey argued that the accused had been falsely implicated and was a victim of circumstances.
