KALYAN: Overnight heavy rainfall lashed Kalyan-Dombivli, uprooting more than 18 trees in the last 24 hours, damaging several vehicles, disrupting power supply and affecting traffic at multiple locations.According to officials, more than 18 incidents of tree falls were reported across the twin cities following incessant rain. Civic authorities and disaster response teams were deployed to clear fallen trees and restore normalcy.One of the major incidents was reported near Shatrunjay Tower at Kalatalav in Kalyan, where a huge tree crashed onto parked vehicles, damaging three cars and two two-wheelers. No injuries were reported as the vehicles were unoccupied.In Dombivli MIDC’s residential area, a large tree fell on Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company’s (MSEDCL) high-tension power lines outside Sai Srushti Society in Sudarshan Nagar at around 3.45 am on Wednesday. The incident disrupted electricity supply to the locality and blocked traffic on the road. Fire brigade personnel removed the tree and cleared the road, while MSEDCL staff carried out emergency repair work and restored power after a few hours.Local resident Raju Nalawade said residents have repeatedly urged the authorities to conduct a survey of hazardous trees in the area to prevent such incidents. “Despite repeated follow-ups, the administration has not taken the issue seriously. Since the onset of the monsoon this year, nearly 10 trees have fallen in the residential area,” he said.Another incident was reported on Malang Road near Chetna School, where the wheel of a container truck got stuck in a damaged roadside chamber, resulting in traffic congestion for some time. Traffic police and civic officials later removed the vehicle and restored the flow of traffic.According to the Thane District Information Office, Kalyan taluka recorded 88.8 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 10.30 am on Wednesday.Civic officials said emergency teams remain on alert as more rainfall has been forecast. Residents have been advised to avoid parking vehicles under trees, stay away from weakened structures and report emergencies to the civic control room.
