Congress open to 50% women’s reservation: Chodankar

Margao: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar on Sunday said Congress is prepared to offer up to 50% reservation for women in electoral tickets if strong women leaders step forward, going well beyond the 30% quota the party has committed to.Chodankar made the remarks at a ‘karyakarta melava’ organised by the Pernem block Congress committee. The meet dwelt on organisational strengthening and chart the party’s roadmap for the taluka ahead of the 2027 assembly elections.“Congress will implement reservations for women wherever possible. If strong women leaders come forward, the party is prepared to go beyond 30% and offer up to 50% reservation,” Chodankar said. The GPCC president said the first step Congress would take upon coming to office would be to protect Goa’s land by scrapping contentious sections of the Town and Country Planning (TCP) Act, specifically citing Sections 16B and 39A, which have long been flashpoints in land-use debates across the state.Chodankar also took credit for stalling two BJP govt initiatives in Pernem. He claimed that Congress had foiled govt’s plan to convert the entire Pernem taluka into a settlement zone, and that the party’s vehement opposition had also derailed a move to classify villages as urban areas — a reclassification that critics have warned would open up agricultural and village land to commercial exploitation. The karyakarta melava was attended by AICC co-incharge Anjali Nimbalkar, GPCC working president Carlos Alvares Ferreira, GPCC mahila morcha president Pratiksha Khalap, district president Mangaldas Naik, and others.
