CHENNAI: An 80-year-old woman who lived alone in an apartment in Chenai’s T Nagar was found murdered on Friday, and the Pondy Bazaar police detained her domestic help and two men in connection with the crime. Police recovered 12 sovereigns of gold jewellery from the arrested trio.The murdered woman, identified as Radha, lived on the second floor of an apartment complex in Kuppusamy Street, T Nagar. She had been living alone after the death of her husband, Krishnamurthy, who was a geologist. Her eldest son lives in the US, while her daughter, a lawyer, is in Delhi. Her other son, Ramji, a retired pilot, stays in Besant Nagar.Around 10am, Ammu, 31, who worked as Radha’s domestic help, alerted a neighbour stating that there was no response to her repeated knocks at the door. The neighbour contacted Ramji.Ramji rushed to the apartment and found the main door locked. After opening it, he found his mother dead on the sofa in the living room with injuries on her face and neck. A pillow was found near the body.Police sent the body to the govt hospital in KK Nagar for postmortem. Investigators found that the food ordered by Radha on Thursday evening had been delivered around 6.30pm. They suspected that the murder had taken place between 4pm and 6pm.The CCTV camera installed in the apartment was not functioning. However, police examined footage from a neighbouring building and found two unidentified men entering the vicinity and leaving during the suspected period.Police questioned Ammu and found that she had conspired with the two men to murder Radha and steal her jewellery.Further investigations were under way to establish the sequence of events and recover the remaining stolen valuables. Police haven’t yet revealed the names of the detained two men.
