Ahmedabad: Gujarat University has been granted Category-II Graded Autonomy status by the University Grants Commission (UGC). GU is the first state university in Gujarat to receive the recognition.With the new status, the university will enjoy greater academic and administrative flexibility. It can launch new courses, academic programmes, departments, schools and specialised centres without seeking prior approval from the UGC.The university can also introduce diploma and certificate programmes aligned with industry requirements and the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF), enhancing students’ employability and skill development.The autonomy also allows the university to appoint up to 20% additional foreign faculty on a contractual basis, subject to Govt of India rules. It can further establish incentive-based mechanisms to attract and retain high-quality teachers and researchers.GU will also be able to admit international students up to 20% beyond its approved intake and independently determine their fee structure. University officials said these provisions are expected to strengthen global engagement and open up additional revenue opportunities.The institution can further expand academic offerings through Open and Distance Learning programmes and set up external peer-review mechanisms whenever required.
