Ahmedabad: All eyes are on a deep depression churning westward toward Gujarat, threatening to unleash another relentless two-day spell of heavy rain. Backed by a convergence of weather systems, including a shear zone and offshore trough, the state is bracing for a wet Friday and Saturday before conditions ease by Sunday.According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system, currently centred over west-central Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, and southeast Madhya Pradesh, is tracking west-southwest at 15kmph. While it is expected to weaken slightly into a depression over the next 24 hours, its path across southern Madhya Pradesh will keep it on a direct collision course with Gujarat.

Met officials warned that almost the entire state should prepare for heavy to very heavy rainfall through Friday and Saturday. A multi-week extended forecast confirms the two-day deluge, driven not just by the depression, but by the combined punch of an offshore trough, a shear zone, and an active Western Disturbance.The impending storm follows a series of extreme rainfall events across Gujarat this season, including staggering single-day tallies in Valsad (106cm) on July 23, Vautha in Ahmedabad (72cm) on July 24, and Santalpur in Patan (39cm) on July 25.As of Thursday morning, Gujarat had already logged 55% of its average seasonal rainfall. South Gujarat leads the charts at 79% of its seasonal quota, while Kutch trails with just 19%, a gap this weekend’s weather system could begin to close.
