‘Drunk’ man brandishing sickle threatens girlfriend and passersby near CSMT in Mumbai, alert cop averts attack

Mumbai: Panic gripped the area outside Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) on Saturday evening when a 20-year-old inebriated man allegedly brandished a sickle and threatened his girlfriend and passersby. No one was hurt in the incident as the accused, identified as Mumbra resident Waqar Akbar Sheikh, was immediately overpowered and disarmed by police constable Vishal Gade, who was on his way to work.Videos of the incident have gone viral on social media.Assistant police inspector Dhanesh Satardekar from MRA Marg police station said Sheikh and his girlfriend travelled by train to CSMT and bought a sickle for his friend, who sells fish for a living, from Crawford Market. On their way back, the couple got into an argument and in a fit of rage, Sheikh, who was drunk, began shouting and charged at his girlfriend with the sickle in hand in the crowded CSMT area, police claimed. He also allegedly threatened passersby who tried to intervene.Gade, who is attached to the LA-2 unit at Tardeo and currently on deputation at the police commissioner’s office, spotted the armed man creating a ruckus. Acting swiftly, Gade approached the suspect from behind, overpowered him, and wrested the sickle from his hand with the help of a passerby, police said.Sheikh and the seized weapon were handed over to the MRA Marg police and a mobile patrol squad who reached the spot. “We immediately placed Sheikh under arrest and brought him to the police station,” said Satardekar.— With PTI inputs
