No hike in EV parking fee in Lutyens’ Delhi in winter, other vehicles to pay double from Nov 1

New Delhi: Electric vehicles will continue to get a 50% rebate on parking charges in Lutyens’ Delhi even as New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) doubles parking fees for other vehicles from Nov 1 as part of its winter action plan to combat pollution. While the parking fee for EV four-wheelers will remain Rs 10 per hour, it will be Rs 40 for non-electric four-wheelers.Addressing a news conference on the comprehensive strategy to curb pollution in the NDMC area following Delhi govt’s direction, vice-chairman Kuljeet Chahal said the decision was aimed at encouraging the adoption of EVs and providing relief to citizens.“The decision will naturally promote cleaner transport options and reduce pollution. We are also promoting electric vehicles in our fleet, with 32 engaged and 28 hired,” he added.NDMC currently has 157 EV charging stations and aims to increase the number to 204 by Dec 31. “By doing this, we will be the only council in the country to have so many charging stations in an area of 42.7 sqkm,” Chahal claimed.NDMC is also installing mist spray systems on 24 prominent road stretches, covering around 1,200 electric poles and 27km of roads. The systems are targeted to be operational by Nov-end.The systems are already operational at six locations: Man Singh Road, Shahjahan Road, Bhagwan Das Road, Tilak Marg, Subramania Bharati Marg and Dr Zakir Hussain Marg. Six more roads — Aurobindo Marg, Prithviraj Road, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Road, Motilal Nehru Marg, Copernicus Marg and Barakhamba Road — are expected to have them within a week. The remaining stretches scheduled to be covered by Nov-end include Mother Teresa Crescent, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Road, Shankar Road, Mandir Marg, Feroze Shah Road, Sikandra Road, Ashoka Road, BKS Marg and Bhai Veer Singh Marg.To control dust emissions, NDMC has deployed 12 truck-mounted or mobile anti-smog guns. “Anti-smog guns have also been installed at 10 prominent private high-rise buildings, including Chanakya Mall and DLF Building, as well as at NDMC buildings such as Yashwant Place, Chanakya Bhawan and Palika Bhawan,” said Chahal. Another 115 anti-smog guns have been deployed at construction and demolition sites, including those belonging to NBCC.For road washing and dust control, the council has three pressure jetting machines and 18 water tankers, 10 of which are equipped with sprinkler systems.“Efforts are also being made to eliminate unpaved road surfaces, while roads and footpaths are being maintained and repaired. Greenery has been developed along 20km of central verges and roadside stretches,” Chahal said.Under its smart irrigation initiative, NDMC is undertaking work across 11 road locations covering around 19.6km to increase the use of treated water for maintaining green spaces and conserve potable water. The council currently has nine decentralised sewage treatment plants with a combined capacity of around 2,900 kilolitres per day (KLD). It has also proposed eight STPs with a capacity of 2,250KLD and five effluent treatment plants with a capacity of 180KLD under the public-private partnership mode.
