Traffic police bank on U-turns to ease flow at DND crossing near Mayur Vihar

New Delhi: For those commuting daily between Noida and east Delhi, DND intersection on UP Link Road is a crucial junction linking several residential areas and routes. During peak hours, vehicles moving in different directions converge here, often slowing traffic. To ease this congestion, Delhi Traffic Police has begun phased trials of two U-turns, with the intersection likely to be closed after Diwali if the experiment proves successful. The first trial is under way at a U-turn near Star City Mall in Mayur Vihar. Traffic officials are monitoring vehicular speeds, volumes and pressure during peak hours, while assessing whether motorists can negotiate the turn safely and smoothly. A second trial is scheduled to begin next week at an existing U-turn near the DND intersection, which is being reorganised to accommodate more vehicles.A source said traffic towards Star City crossing often slows down as vehicles heading in the opposite direction also converge at the same stretch. This results in vehicles bunching up, with traffic building up as motorists attempt to negotiate the crossing together. Separating the turning movements through the designated U-turns is expected to ease this pressure and improve traffic flow, particularly during busy hours.Under the proposed arrangement, motorists travelling from Noida and DND towards Crown Plaza hotel, Ghazipur Road, New Ashok Nagar, Chilla village, Trilokpuri and Vasundhara Enclave will use the U-turn near the mall if the intersection is closed.Meanwhile, vehicles from New Ashok Nagar and Trilokpuri that head for DND or Akshardham will use the older U-turn near the intersection. The revised arrangement will replace direct movement through the crossing with designated turning points, changing how traffic flows through the junction.DCP (east) traffic Shweta Singh Chauhan said, “The plan aims at replacing direct movement through the mall and DND crossing with designated turning points, effectively changing how traffic flows through the junction. For commuters, the impact will depend on whether the revised arrangement reduces queues and makes turning movements smoother or adds to the distance and time taken to reach their destinations. It will further help in reducing accidents as it will replace direct cross movement.”The DCP added, “Traffic police, under the supervision of TI Surender Kumar and ACP Amreek Singh, are using the trial period to assess how the two U-turns handle peak-hour demand and whether the revised movement pattern creates operational difficulties or not. The final decision will be taken after reviewing traffic flow following Diwali.”
