Navi Mumbai: Two thieves, under the guise of setting up a fruit-selling business at a rented commercial shop adjacent to a jewellery store in Kopri village, broke through the common wall using a drilling machine and hammers and burgled the jewellery store on Friday around 3 am.The duo of thieves decamped with around 2.5 kg of silver items kept on display. As the thieves attempted to break open the treasury safe, in which gold ornaments were kept, in the vault room, the store alarm was activated, due to which the thieves panicked and escaped with only silver items on display.The incident occurred at Meghana Jewellers in Daryadaulat building, sector-26A, Kopri village in Vashi node. Acting on a complaint by the owner of Meghana Jewellers identified as Moti Singh, the APMC police have registered an FIR for house-trespass and theft against the two unidentified thieves.Abasaheb Patil, senior inspector of APMC, said, “In the CCTV footage surveillance of Meghana Jewellers, the duo thieves wearing masks have been captured while committing the burglary, which they executed taking advantage of the loud noise of music speakers and traditional drums played by Ganpati mandals during the immersion procession to drown out the sound of their drilling and hammering of the common wall. The thieves had taken on rent the commercial shop adjacent to Meghana Jewellers on Sept 1 and had set up fruits selling business.”Inspector Patil further said, “The owner of the commercial shop was summoned to submit the rental agreement, when he told that the rent was fixed for ₹16,000 per month and ₹10,000 as deposit. However, the agreement was not inked as the tenant did not give his documents of residential address proof, PAN card and Aadhar card and had requested him to allow to start the fruit selling business by assuring to submit the documents soon. However, the tenant kept dilly-dallying in giving documents but had paid one month rent and deposit. As of now, the duo accused thieves are unidentified. The modus operandi of committing such burglary is mostly by criminals from Jharkhand. Accordingly, efforts are being taken to identify the duo thieves using technical expertise and network of informers.
