Pune: Students enrolled in first-year junior college (FYJC, Std XI) across Maharashtra will now have greater flexibility in modifying their academic choices after admission. The directorate of secondary and higher secondary education has introduced a new online system allowing students to change their stream, subjects, medium of instruction and even their junior college.Director of education Mahesh Palkar said, “Many students realise after admission that their interests or career plans differ from the stream they initially selected. This system provides them with an opportunity to make necessary changes through a transparent online process.”Education officials, however, clarified that science-stream students might move to commerce or arts, but students from commerce or arts could not switch to science after admission. Explaining the rationale behind the move, they said science required laboratory practicals, technical coursework and foundational concepts taught from the start of FYJC and needed for Std XII. “Restrictions on moving into the science stream have been retained due to its structured academic requirements,” Palkar said.The online facility will be accessible from 10am on the department’s official portal.Under the new system, both students progressing from FYJC to Std XII and those seeking fresh FYJC admissions can apply online to change their stream, subjects or medium of instruction. Students from CBSE, ICSE and other boards outside Maharashtra will also be eligible to apply for admission into the Maharashtra state board system.The officials said students seeking any change would need to submit valid reasons as part of the process. The department will also release detailed guidelines to ensure smooth implementation for both students and institutions. “The initiative also aims to support families affected by job transfers. Students whose parents have been transferred under govt orders will be allowed to change their junior colleges by submitting the necessary documents. In exceptional situations, such as serious personal or family circumstances, students may apply for a college transfer through their current institution, with applications reviewed by the deputy director of education concerned,” Palkar said.Students dubbed the move much-needed. Ketaki Ranade, an FYJC student from Pune, said, “Many students choose streams under pressure or without enough information. This facility will help them make better decisions before it’s too late.”Another student, Aditya Patil, said, “The online process will save time and reduce confusion. It’s a very positive step as students should have the opportunity to align their studies with their interests and career goals.”The directorate of education has told all junior colleges to implement the new system promptly. The officials said the initiative was designed to make the admission process more student-friendly, while maintaining academic standards and eligibility criteria.
