Salt Lake blocks go without water, residents forced to hire tankers

Kolkata: A drop in water distribution from the Tallah treatment plant has disrupted supply to different blocks in Salt Lake, forcing residents to buy water from tankers.BMC officials claimed the problem was not on the part of the civic body but that the supply from the Tallah treatment plant was low. An official said they had alerted the authorities concerned and hoped that the matter would be resolved in a couple of days. The affected areas included Karunamoyee, AE, BE, CE and FD blocks. “Water supply has been drastically low for the past few days. The pressure was very low at certain times and no supply at all at some points. There was no notification about this disruption. We tried to contact the ward assistant or supervisor but their response has been extremely reluctant. Some residents did not even get through to them,” said a resident of Karunamoyee.Several residents of FD Block on Friday complained about no water supply and no response from the Bidhannagar municipal corporation. They said they had to hire water tankers from private agencies at an exorbitant amount. “We have been trying to contact the civic authorities but to no avail. We finally hired a 10,000-litre capacity water tanker from a private agency at Rs 2,500 to fill the reservoirs of our cooperative housing,” said an FD Block resident.“There has been almost no water supply for the past three days. So I had to hire a tanker from the civic body,” said Pranjal Chatterjee, a resident of AE Block.Govt officials said a plan was on to augment supply from the New Town water treatment plant so that the dependency on the Tallah plant reduced. At present, BMC receives close to 17 million gallons of water per day, around 10 MGD of which comes from Tallah and the rest from the New Town plant. Most of the filtered water is supplied to Salt Lake, which covers 14 of the 41 BMC wards.
