Ahmedabad: Vehicle owners in Gujarat who do not clear traffic e-challans within 75 days may face suspension of licence and vehicle registration-related services on the Parivahan portal under a next-generation challan system introduced by state police on Aug 12.The upgraded system gives motorists a formal online process to contest e-challans they believe have been issued incorrectly. Vehicle owners will have 45 days from the date of issuance to either pay the fine or submit an objection through the Parivahan portal.To file a grievance, motorists must update their mobile number on the portal to receive SMS alerts and upload supporting documents to substantiate their claim that the challan was wrongly issued.Officials said police will scrutinise the evidence submitted and dispose of complaints within 30 days. This makes the maximum period from challan generation to grievance disposal 75 days.If the challan is upheld, the vehicle owner must pay the prescribed penalty. Failure to do so even after the 75-day window will lead to suspension of all licence- and registration-related services linked to the vehicle on the Parivahan portal, officials said.Motorists dissatisfied with the police decision can approach a court by filing an appeal after depositing 50% of the challan amount.To ensure speedy grievance redressal, district-level officers have been assigned responsibility for handling complaints. A DSP-rank officer will oversee the process, while a PI-rank officer will examine the evidence and decide the case within 30 days.Officials said the new system is aimed at improving transparency, accountability and efficiency in challan issuance, dispute resolution and fine collection.
