Kolkata: The iconic Howrah Bridge is all set to have a new dynamic lighting system from Saturday. There will also be synchronised music and sound show along with the lighting on selected days, starting from Saturday.This was revealed by the chairman of Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT), Rathendra Raman, at a meeting held recently. Later, the deputy chairman of KoPT, Samrat Rahi told TOI that the dynamic illumination of Howrah Bridge was closed since the past five months or more for installation of the new lighting system. “The dynamic lighting will have three features — profile, volumetric and skeleton lighting. The previous dynamic lighting system had only the profile lighting feature,” he added. Rahi, pointed out that this time the dynamic lighting would have features similar to the one at Eiffel Tower.“We feel it would be even more absorbing because the tower is a vertical structure and bridge is a horizontal structure,” he added.A few months ago, Coal India Limited signed an MoU with the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK) to support the new dynamic illumination of the Howrah Bridge in the metropolis. The idea was to transform the over 80-year-old architectural marvel into a dazzling visual spectacle using solar-powered lights. According to Rahi, the dynamic illumination will highlight the bridge’s structural brilliance, while offering a unique night-time experience for thousands of daily commuters and visitors. According to him, the total cost of this project has been estimated to be Rs 10 crore, which is being implemented by Havells.Rahi also pointed out that the light, music and sound show would be held on occasions like the Republic Day, Poila Baisakh, Durga Puja and Diwali.Signify, formerly known as Philips Lighting, had installed the first dynamic lighting system of the bridge in March 2020.
