Ahmedabad: Husband faces abetment charge after teen ends life

Ahmedabad: A 17-year-old girl allegedly died by suicide after being turned out of her matrimonial home and later being refused re-entry by her husband despite repeated pleas, police said. The teenager, Sanofar Banu Shaikh, recorded a video message before jumping into Sabarmati River from the riverfront on Aug 10.Based on the video and a complaint filed by her father, Riverfront West police registered a case of abetment of suicide against her husband, Fardeen Shaikh.According to the FIR, Sanofar lived with her parents in Narol and married Fardeen, 21, about six months ago after the two entered into a relationship. Their families had consented to the marriage, following which the couple settled in Petlad of Anand district.Police said the marriage later became strained. On Aug 3, Fardeen allegedly sent Sanofar back to her parental home. She stayed with her parents for the next seven days and remained distressed over the separation, the FIR stated. On Aug 10, while at home with her mother, Sanofar was reportedly looking through her wedding album when she broke down. She called Fardeen and pleaded with him to take her back, allegedly assuring him that she would live according to his wishes. However, he allegedly refused.According to the FIR, Sanofar later told her family that she was feeling uneasy and stepped out of the house around 11am. She went to the Sabarmati Riverfront, recorded a video addressed to her family members and husband, and sent it to her sister before jumping into the river. In the video, Sanofar spoke about her mother, brothers, and aunt, saying they had always supported her and fulfilled her wishes. She alleged that Fardeen had ended their relationship and said she could not imagine living without him.The extreme step has drawn comparisons with the Feb 2021 riverfront suicide of Ayesha Banu Makrani, 23, who had also recorded a video message before jumping into Sabarmati River after allegedly facing harassment from her husband and in-laws.
