Agartala: The Tripura govt has been sanctioned a Rs 1,200-crore Asian Development Bank (ADB) soft loan to upgrade flood mitigation infrastructure, storm-water drainage, drinking-water supply and tourism initiatives under Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC).Urban development secretary Milind Dharmrao Ramteke said the project would strengthen Agartala’s efforts to tackle chronic waterlogging and urban flooding during heavy rain, easing hardship for around six lakh residents.Of the proposed funding, about Rs 600 crore is planned for developing and improving the city’s stormwater drainage system. The ADB-backed programme will also address flood mitigation and the infrastructure for drinking water.Agartala has seen recent flooding and waterlogging due to continuous rainfall. Seventeen pumps are currently operating across the city to clear accumulated rainwater, and three more are planned. Ramteke said some areas face waterlogging when rainfall exceeds about 40 mm within one to two hours, though water typically recedes within 30 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on location and intensity.
