GFP demands that govt must ensure that ST seats are reserved in 2027 assembly polls

Panaji: GFP said that state govt must write to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to notify the Scheduled Tribe (ST) reservation for the 2027 assembly elections and to also notify the constituencies reserved for the Gauda, Kunbi and Velip community. The notification of ST political reservation in Goa is a long-awaited step towards ensuring constitutional representation for Goa’s ST communities, said GFP president Vijai Sardesai.“The next crucial step is the Election Commission of India issuing the notification reserving the identified assembly constituencies, so that this hard-won right is translated into meaningful representation in the coming elections,” he said.Sardesai called for complete transparency and a legally sustainable notification process. “Any avoidable lapse, including reliance on 2011 Census data, which is now 15 years old, could be challenged in court. This should not become a pretext for delays or litigation,” he said, adding that ST communities do not deserve uncertainty.
