Surat: Limbayat police have filed an FIR that alleges that a ‘social worker’ extorted Rs 4 lakh from a businessman. The accused, Raees Shaikh, allegedly threated that if the money was not paid, he would get Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) officials to demolish the victim’s building.The complainant, Zuber Ansari, deals in packing material. As he needed land to expand his business, he had bought two plots in Govind Nagar two months ago. Ansari began construction on the plots with all necessary SMC approvals. Shaikh allegedly went to Ansari’s office and told him that his ongoing construction would be demolished with help from the SMC.Shaikh threatened Ansari saying he had got many such structures demolished in the past. He demanded Rs 4 lakh from Ansari if he wanted to continue with the construction. Surrendering to the threats, Ansari agreed to pay Rs 4 lakh in few days. As he suffered losses in business and had few order, he could not come up with the money.Shaikh then went to Ansari’s office again on July 25 and made threats. He gave him an ultimatum to pay up within a week. He also told Ansari that he would make sure the latter was jailed. Ansari began living in fear and finally told his family what was happening. They advised him to go to the police, after which a complaint was filed.Another extortion case filed against ParwanaOne more FIR has been filed against history-sheeter Islam Pathan alias Parwana for extorting Rs. 3.5 lakh. Mushtaq Khatik, a meat trader, was building a new four-floor building for his family. Khatik had demolished the old home and started construction. After the slabs of four floor were ready, Parwana went to Khatik and threatened him saying that through his contacts in the SMC he would get the building demolished. After a couple of days, Khatik got a notice and his fourth floor was demolished in Dec 2025 by the SMC. Parwana then called Khatik told him that if he paid Rs 6 lakh, no more demolition would be carried out. After a common acquaintance interceded, Khatik paid Parwana Rs 3.5 lakh. After Parwana’s arrest by the ACB recently, Khatik gathered the courage to lodge an FIR.
