Ahmedabad: A 43-year-old deputy subedar of the Indian Army was arrested by the Sabarmati railway police after he was allegedly caught carrying 84 bottles of liquor reserved for defence personnel at Gandhinagar railway station.According to the FIR, railway police personnel were patrolling Platform No. 1 on Tuesday afternoon when the Daulatpur-Gandhinagar Express arrived. During the patrol, officers noticed a passenger crossing the railway tracks while carrying three trolley bags and a shoulder bag. Finding his movement suspicious, they intercepted him and escorted him to the railway police outpost for verification.Police said the man identified himself as a deputy subedar in the Indian Army, originally from Muli taluka in Surendranagar district and currently posted at Jalandhar Cantonment in Punjab. During the verification, officers recovered a train ticket from Chandigarh to Gandhinagar Capital, Rs 10,000 in cash, and his Army identity card.A search of the four bags allegedly led to the recovery of 84 sealed bottles of Indian-made foreign liquor bearing labels stating that the stock was “for sale only to defence personnel”. Police said the seized liquor measured 63 litres and was valued at about Rs 1.25 lakh.Police stated that the Army personnel failed to produce any permit authorising possession or transportation of liquor in Gujarat, where prohibition is in force. He also allegedly could not furnish permission from his superior officers to transport the consignment.The liquor and the bags were seized and sent for further legal proceedings. The Sabarmati railway police registered a case against the accused under the Gujarat Prohibition Act.
