Ahmedabad: A flyer was arrested with 4.2kg of hydroponic marijuana (ganja) in his baggage on Wednesday, making this the second seizure of hydroponic weed within four days.“Based on passenger profiling, officers of the air intelligence unit (AIU) and the Ahmedabad customs team intercepted a male passenger who had arrived from Bangkok. An examination of the passenger’s checked-in trolley bag led to the recovery of 22 packets wrapped in transparent polythene and concealed inside food packages,” a department release stated.The passenger was identified as a 40-year-old man from Ulhasnagar in Maharashtra. It was his first visit to Ahmedabad airport.“A field test on the recovered substance showed a positive result for hydroponic marijuana. The contraband has been seized under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985,” the release stated.A source in the customs department said, “Passengers acting as carriers often come from Southeast Asian countries and conceal the contraband in checked-in luggage under other goods. The carriers are often first-timers who smuggle the package for cash or other rewards.”
